Crafting for a Cause: A Wider Circle

There is a wonderful organization in Montgomery County Maryland called A Wider Circle (AWC). They work tirelessly to end poverty in the County (and beyond). At the heart of their services is a used furniture collection and distribution program. Basically, they accept donations of "dignity condition" furniture that is given to families in need. This simple concept helps to ensure that children have beds to sleep in, families have tables to gather around, and that hard earned money doesn't have to be spent on expensive household goods. Since its inception, A Wider Circle has furnished the homes of more than 19,236 families (72,000+ people impacted)!

A while ago I reached out to the folks at AWC and asked if I could volunteer by refinishing some of the pieces that were in need of a little sprucing up. We finally met last week. It was a wonderful meeting and I drove off with two pieces of furniture.

I have big plans for these pieces and have already started working on them. I plan to paint the small bench and sew a cushion for it. As for the cabinet, I'm going to add legs to it, paint it a bright color, fix the interior shelf and either stencil the back panel or cover it with paper or fabric. I pulled a few yards of fabric out of my stash today that I think would work well on either piece.

What do you think? I really love the black and white print so I'll definitely be using it. Perhaps on both pieces. I can't wait to start painting and will keep you updated on my progress.
